The European Diversity Month raises awareness across the European Union of the importance of diversity and inclusion in the workplace and in society. It recognizes the efforts of organizations to promote diversity in the workplace and to create an inclusive working environment.
We call on all European organizations to stand up and act for diversity, whether or not they are a signatory to a Diversity Charter
Greetings from Helena Dalli, EU Commissioner for Equality
Why do we need a European Diversity Month?
The European Commission has a long-standing commitment to promoting diversity and inclusion and combating discrimination through legislative action. These measures have helped to improve equality and have enabled millions of people to reach their full potential. At the same time, we all need to work together to create an equal and inclusive environment, including public institutions, private businesses, non-profit organizations, and cities. Especially now, during the Covid19 pandemic, when diversity and inclusion are at risk.
Did you know that more than half (59%) of Europeans believe that discrimination based on ethnic origin is widespread? One in three people of African descent say they have experienced racist harassment in the last five years. More than 70 years after the Holocaust, Jews are exposed to anti-Semitism in all walks of life.
Building bridges in 2022
This year’s theme is building bridges. Building bridges between organisations and areas of inclusion and diversity policy (race, gender, age, etc.).
We want to encourage you to build partnerships with NGOs, governmental institutions, other companies or civil society to work together to promote diversity. We would also like you to build bridges between the different aspects of diversity and make sure that your policies and activities are more intersectional.
Get involved in EU Diversity Month!
You can organize virtual or hybrid awareness-raising workshops for employees, round-table discussions with experts, publish a diversity cookbook, organize a social media campaign, collaborate with non-profit organizations or volunteers – be creative and make diversity visible within your organization, despite the pandemic.
